Saturday the 9th of February saw Carlo arrive at Vereeniging Raceway in high spirits. He took to the track for qualifying in the knowledge that securing a top 3 spot on the grid would be a tall order with the field stacked with drivers who had vastly more experience in DD2 than himself. But was fairly pleased with 4th on the grid knowing he could mount a charge from where he was on the grid. Race 1 was not the start Carlo wanted having a slow start and dropping a few places. The race then went from bad to worse when two fellow competitors spun into the left turn after the sweep with Carlo stuck behind them with nowhere to go. This resulted in him dropping right to the back of the field but being the hard charger that he is, he got back in the race but being so far back he could only manage to fight his way back to 10th. Race 2 was probably the best race Carlo has had in his short DD2 career. Fired up for race 2 and wanting to show that he was capable of running with the best of them he charged hard and made it into 4th by the end of the race. What made it a impressive show of grit and determination is the fact that 2nd placed driver Justin Allison was less than a second ahead of Carlo. Race 3 was again not so great with Carlo having to again fight his way back up the field after making a mistake but as the old saying goes if you don’t make mistakes you aren’t pushing hard enough. He managed to fight his way back up to 7th but not at any point during the race day did he stop pushing as hard as he could. At the end of the day his results netted Carlo a 5th position overall for the day. Not the result he was hoping for but none the less what he takes away from the weekend is a better knowledge of what it takes to run at the sharp end of the field in DD2. Now knowing that he is capable of running at the front he will be more determined than ever before. The next race for Carlo will be the 2nd Regional at Zwartkops Raceway on the 2nd of March.
